John, a gentleman, courteous through and through,Always willing to help others too. One of the nicest people you could wish to meet,Beloved by all neighbours along the street. His family were his greatest strength,For them he’d go to any length. A welcoming and genial host,Perhaps something he loved the most. He loved his garden and his lawn,But those edges left him all forlorn. His sense of humour never let him down,With Anne he won the ballroom crown. Not averse to the odd firework or two,That sense of fun did see him through. Driving in his little red van, stopping for a chat,And you know one always felt a little better for that. He was brave until the last. Now let’s cherish memories past, John, whether for family or friend,This incredible journey comes to its end. P.S. footnote from Anne - THIS WAS THE POEM WRITTEN BY ALAN HUNTER (a friend together with wife Sue and neighbours)WHICH ALAN READ OUT AT JOHN'S FUNERAL.
